Who buys restaurant-grade charcoal in the UK

Ocakbaşı and kebab grills, tandoor kitchens, steakhouses and churrascarias in London, Birmingham, Manchester and other cities burn charcoal through every service, and buy it from catering distributors and cash-and-carry wholesalers. Restaurant-grade lumpwood means large, dense pieces with little dust that hold a steady heat; Marabu burns longest, indicatively up to around 7 hours and varying by lot.

BBQ retailers and garden-centre suppliers stock lumpwood and briquettes in smaller bags for the summer season. Private-label bags with your brand are available on request, and retailers who ask about BS EN 1860-2, the barbecue charcoal standard, get a straight answer on what we can document for the lot; we do not claim certification.

Bags, pallets and full loads

Standard bags are 10, 15 and 20 kg, the sizes UK caterers usually buy, with 2 to 5 kg retail bags on request. Agree the bag size first, then the quotation states bags per pallet and net kilograms per pallet.

A full 13.6 m truck takes about 33 Euro pallets, a 20 ft container about 10 to 11 and a 40 ft high-cube about 22 to 24, indicative figures. Charcoal fills a load by volume before it reaches the weight limit, so the exact net load is confirmed in the quotation before loading.

How the charcoal reaches the UK

A full truck by road through the EU with a Channel crossing can be quoted for regular resupply to a warehouse. For larger volumes, a 20 ft or 40 ft container loads at Thessaloniki, about 230 km from Skopje, for Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway. The Incoterm and delivery point are agreed per order, and the carrier confirms the route and transit time.

Charcoal is sea cargo under the IMDG Code (UN 1361, class 4.2), and IMDG Amendment 42-24 removed the former charcoal exemptions from 1 January 2026. The carrier confirms its acceptance and the dangerous-goods documents for the sea or ferry leg of every booking.
