Lump charcoal for US buyers

Wholesale hardwood lump charcoal for US importers and distributors

Virovo Promet supplies hardwood lump charcoal and charcoal briquettes to the United States by the 20 ft or 40 ft container, quoted per order. Typical buyers are importers, foodservice and restaurant-supply distributors, BBQ and kamado retailers and ethnic-grocery wholesalers who need restaurant-grade lump in bulk, with a written specification, bag sizes in pounds and the details US customs asks for.

Who buys lump charcoal by the container

Steakhouses, Mediterranean, Turkish, Balkan and Latin grills buy restaurant-grade lump charcoal: large, dense pieces with little dust that hold a steady heat through service. Foodservice distributors supply those kitchens; BBQ and kamado retailers and grocery wholesalers stock 10 to 20 kg bags (about 22 to 44 lb) for their customers.

We describe every lot in a written specification with indicative figures, such as burn time and fixed carbon, that vary by lot. Private-label bags with your brand are available on request, with the US label wording confirmed by your compliance adviser.

Which charcoal we quote for the US

For US delivery we quote oak, beech and acacia lump charcoal and charcoal briquettes; other hardwoods depend on current availability. Oak and beech give long, even heat for grills and smokers, acacia lights fast and burns hot, and briquettes give a uniform, predictable burn.

Marabu, our longest-burning restaurant charcoal, comes from Cuba. US sanctions bar goods of Cuban origin (31 CFR 515.204), so we do not offer Marabu for delivery to the United States.

Bags, pallets and containers in US units

Standard bags are 10 kg (about 22 lb), 15 kg (about 33 lb) and 20 kg (about 44 lb), with smaller retail bags on request. A Euro pallet measures 1200 x 800 mm (about 47 x 31.5 in); tell us which pallet your warehouse handles and the quotation confirms the pallet type, bags per pallet and net weight per pallet.

A 20 ft container takes about 10 to 11 Euro pallets and a 40 ft high-cube about 22 to 24, indicative figures. Charcoal is light and bulky, so the box fills by volume before it reaches the weight limit. One metric tonne is about 1.1 US short tons; the exact net load is confirmed in the quotation before loading.

How the container ships

Containers load at Thessaloniki, the deep-sea port about 230 km from Skopje, for a US East Coast, Gulf or West Coast port such as New York/New Jersey, Savannah, Houston or Los Angeles/Long Beach. The port of discharge and Incoterm (FOB, CFR or CIF) are agreed per order, and the shipping line confirms routing and transit time at booking.

Charcoal is sea cargo under the IMDG Code (UN 1361, class 4.2). IMDG Amendment 42-24 removed the former charcoal exemptions from 1 January 2026, so the carrier's acceptance and dangerous-goods documents are confirmed for every booking.

US import checklist

Duty: wood charcoal under HTS 4402.90.01 has a general duty rate of Free in the US tariff schedule (checked October 2026). Additional tariffs depend on origin and current trade measures and change often, so your customs broker confirms the total for the actual entry.

Lacey Act: wood charcoal (HTS 4402) has needed a Lacey Act plant declaration since 1 October 2009, naming the genus and species and the country of harvest. Ask us for these details for the lot before shipment. Ocean shipments also need an Importer Security Filing (10+2) before loading, and wooden pallets must be ISPM 15 treated and marked, or they can be refused.

What to include in your enquiry

Send the charcoal type, the number of containers, the bag size in kg or lb, the port of discharge or warehouse ZIP code, the Incoterm you prefer, any private-label needs and the documents your broker asks for. We reply with a written offer naming the product, pallet count, net load and terms.
