How we rank charcoal

A grill cook judges charcoal on five things, so we rank on the same five: how long the embers last, how hot they get, how much fixed carbon is in the piece (more carbon means more heat and less smoke), how much it sparks once lit, and how even the pieces are. Every figure comes from the lots we supply and is indicative; exact specifications are agreed for each order.

  • Burn time: hours of usable embers per load
  • Heat: peak temperature of the ember bed
  • Fixed carbon: the share of the piece that burns as clean heat
  • Sparks and smoke once the bed is fully lit
  • Piece size: even, large pieces dose and stack best

Best charcoal compared (indicative values, vary by batch)

1. Marabu: the best charcoal overall

Marabu is the hardest, heaviest charcoal we sell, and the one steakhouses and kebab grills ask for by name. A load holds embers for 6 to 8 hours and more on a traditional grill, and 8 to 12 hours in some closed grills and smokers. Fixed carbon is at least 80 % and often 82 to 85 %, with a calorific value of 7,000 kcal/kg or more and no more than 3 % ash.

The pieces are cylindrical, shiny black and ring like metal when knocked. Smoke is very low and sparks are minimal, though Marabu sparks slightly more than African charcoal because it burns so hot. If you can buy only one charcoal for a busy grill, buy this one.

2. Namibian: the best charcoal with almost no sparks

Namibian hardwood charcoal gives up to 7 hours of steady embers at around 840 °C, with fixed carbon typically above 82 %. Its real strength is how clean it burns: almost no sparks, far fewer than Marabu, and a grill that stays tidy. Restaurants with open dining rooms or terrace grills choose it for exactly that.

It comes in two grades: a restaurant grade with large pieces in 15 kg BOPP bags, and a BBQ grade with the same figures in smaller pieces for home and garden grills. FSC and EUDR are available, which matters to EU importers and retail chains.

3. Mangrove: the best slow, steady ember bed

Mangrove charcoal comes in heavy, dense, elongated pieces that burn slowly and leave a firm ember bed that lasts about 6 hours at around 830 °C. Fixed carbon is typically above 80 %. It suits grill restaurants and kebab houses that run long, all-evening services and want heat that stays level instead of peaking and dying.

The rest of the range: best for a specific job

The top three win on burn time. The rest of our range wins on something else, so pick by the job:

  • Halaban: around 840 °C with very little smoke or sparks, about 6 hours. Best for skewers, yakitori and kebab grills that need intense heat.
  • Oak: about 5 hours at around 820 °C, minimal ash and a classic savoury flavour. Best for traditional grill houses.
  • Ayin: large, solid pieces with little dust, few sparks, about 5 hours. Best for steakhouses and catering.
  • Acacia: lights quickly, mildly sweet aroma, about 4 hours. Best for supermarkets and retail bags.
  • Beech: lights fast and burns mild and clean, about 3 hours. Best for everyday home barbecues and street food.
  • Charcoal briquettes: uniform pieces that load evenly. Best for planned portions on barbecue grills.
